4/7/2009 Wisconsin DNR is revoking all Sportsman XP registrations for the 2009 model year. The letter states that since the XP is designed 14 inch wheels it does not meet the Wisconsin standards and is not considered a ATV ( Which is maximum 12 inch) & is not allowed on the trail system. All Xp owners are requested to take off the WI sticker and mail it back to DNR with the card for a refund of the registration amount. The letter also starts that the XP can only be driven on private land & frozen water ways. The letter also states that Polaris was aware of this situation. I received this information from a XP owner that just received the letter when he came home from work. I will post the letter tomorrow.

For what it's worth...there is a typo in that letter.
The letter he posted on HL states that there is a maximum wheel width of 6"...while the actual website states that there is actually a 6" wheel width minimum.

I can see the rules changing to include ATV's with 14" wheels before too long as this is becoming more and more common.

That is just crazy right there! I agree with David though on the rules changing.

Change will have to come but the problem is when? All those guys including a good friend of mine who own XP's and have places in WI will now have to wait unless they want a hefty fine. I am sure the DNR (trail police) is waiting around the corner counting the money!

New wheels and tires won't help the XP guys...since the minimum size wheel you can put on a 550XP or 850XP is 14".
12" wheels won't fit.

Because of the BS with the Wisconsin 850 XP's my buddy just traded his 09 camo in for a new RZR. Did the deal over in Watersmeet MI.

RZR are legal on certain trails up north including the Dunbar trail.

Ya I heard they are tryimg them out but to invest on one before it is a done deal seems kinda foolish to me. I bet they don't let em on the system after the trial is over.

BigDW looks like there is a loop hole with the rzr's in WI. You can register them on the road in MI by adding horn, turn signals and DOT tires as a home made roadster and then legally drive them on the WI trails after the test period since they have plates on them!

I bet the dealer he bought the 850xp from knew it was not legal in Wisconsin. What dealer did he buy it from? So I know not to buy anything from there.
